About the program:

Monta Kroma (1919–1994) is one of the brightest and most innovative representatives of Latvian modernist poetry. The events and publications dedicated to the centenary of the poetess, including the selection “Trotuārs”/”Pavament” compiled by the literary scholar Agija Ābiķe-Kondrāte, a few years ago brought up with new energy the role of this extraordinary poetess in the lyrical space of the 1970s and in the entire history of Latvian poetry. Dynamic city motifs, intimate revelation of feelings, sensuality and graphic expression can be heard in Kroma’s works. Often not accepted or misunderstood by the literary milieu of the time, these poems have survived their time and today allow us to talk about Kroma as an innovative and fascinating poet whose legacy attracts attention both in the context of modernist and urban poetry and feminist writing. The program “Yellow pavement” with original music by Anna Veismane was also inspired by Kroma’s poetry. Poetry and music will be performed by the great actress Guna Zariņa of the New Riga Theatre and well-known Latvian musicians: flautist Maija Zandberga, pianist Rihards Plešanovs and bassoonist Jānis Semjonovs.
