The musical and theatrical performance “Flute Dream. Emīls Dārziņš – 150!” is a tribute to the composer whose star shines eternally in the Latvian musical firmament.
A true son of Jaunpiebalga, Emīls Dārziņš remained deeply loyal to his homeland, Latvia, and its culture, making an indelible contribution to its development. Though only a few dozen of the composer’s works have survived, each is a unique treasure—a beautiful and distinctive gem. Dārziņš’s mystical, captivating, and enchanting musical language is unparalleled.
The initial concept for this documentary performance, created by Sigvards Kļava and director Uģis Brikmanis, interprets Dārziņš’s music through a parallel metaphor found in Nobel Prize laureate Hermann Hesse’s fairy tale “Flute Dream”.
This unique performance intertwines the German author’s fairy tale, narrated by actor Mārtiņš Vilsons, with Dārziņš’s romantic solo songs, performed by pianist Rihards Plešanovs and soloists, as well as choral works. The program will feature live renditions by the Latvian Radio Choir alongside historical recordings by the Reiters Choir.
