Quatuor Modigliani. Vienna Classics

The Modigliani String Quartet, like the Italian master of portraits Amedeo Modigliani, celebrates artists’ creativity, innovative spirit and aspiration to break the traditional norms of chamber music. These qualities, combined with an inspiring energy and a meticulously nurtured sense of rhythm and balance, make this ensemble of four charming French musicians one of the world’s finest string quartets. On this occasion, the musicians will offer a particularly sophisticated programme, whose roots lie in Vienna – the centre of art, exceptionally rich in tradition. Dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven’s patron and art lover Count Razumovsky, in the composer’s hands String Quartet No. 8 has become a masterpiece of the most astounding technical virtuosity and symphonic scope, while Johannes Brahms’ last string quartet lets one catch a glimpse of the German romantic’s lesser-known fearlessly experimental spirit. By contrast, Anton Webern’s Five Movements for String Quartet – a true masterclass in abstraction, laconism and mathematical precision – will allow the listeners to experience the breath of 20th-century Vienna.
